What gear do you use?

Canon 5D MkIII
Canon 50D
Canon 35mm f/1.4L (my favorite lens!)
Canon 85mm f/1.8
Canon 50mm f/1.8
Canon 580EX Flash

How did you get started?

It was truly a happy accident! I went to OU for a year and couldn’t decide what I wanted to do, so I took a year off. I randomly decided to buy a camera (a Canon Rebel XTi) and a little lens (Canon 50mm f/1.8) and I fell completely in love. I learned the ins and outs of that camera and completely taught myself. I’ve never taken a photography class, but I practiced and I learned what every dial and button did and why it did it.
I took some senior pictures of my cousin for fun a month or so afterwards, and within a few months I had strangers offering to pay me for photos. I set up a little website and everything has snowballed from there. That was over 7 years ago! It’s been an amazing adventure, I’ve learned a ton, and I’m super excited about what the future holds!

Where did the name “indiejane” come from?

When I started my business, I didn’t see it becoming my full time job. I didn’t want to use my name because of how common it is (my mom chose the most popular name of 1987, bless her) so I wanted something that sounded fun! My business is 100% run by me, so I knew I wanted “indie” to be in my business title to represent the independent aspect of it. Someone said “‘Indie’ describes your business, what’s a word that describes you?” and I replied “I don’t know, I’m a little plain Jane.” And thus, indiejane was born. ;) It’s a name and brand that I’ve grown to love dearly and it’s become such a huge part of who I am.

What can I expect on my shoot?

Shoots with me are extremely laid back. Realistically you just need to show up with a good attitude, clothes, and any props you want to use! I’ll walk you through everything, choose the locations (unless there’s somewhere in particular you’d like to shoot), show you how to pose, and make you look awesome. I’ll probably make a fool of myself in some way or another, so no worries about possibly embarrassing yourself.. I’ve likely got that part covered. haha.

What should I wear on my shoot?

I know a lot of photographers get picky about outfits, but I’m truly not. Wear what you’re comfortable in. If you don’t normally care for dressing to the nines, don’t show up in high heels. If you normally wear jeans and a t-shirt, bring them. Your photos reflect you!
If you’re still needing some direction, I always recommend jewel tones (they photograph beautifully and look great on practically everyone). And please don’t be afraid to bring patterns! This girl loves stripes, florals, plaids, polka dots…whatever you love! Families and couples, coordinating is wonderful but please avoid wearing the same outfits! Matching is fine…to an extent. :)
Another reminder: Accessories! They’re often forgotten, but they can really make an image. So remember to bring along your jewelry, scarves, hats, etc!
I also have an inspiration board on Pinterest to help give you some ideas. You can find it here: what to wear.

How do you get white/pastel hair?

I know this isn’t a business related question but I get asked this more than anything. haha. I posted a tutorial here. :)

What are your favorite things ever in the history of ever? (I may have made this question up.)
My little family, my doggies (Baron, Koen, Ollie, and Jane), tea, happy people, tattoos, sarcasm, and food. Lots of food.
